Pigmentation & Hyperpigmentation

What is Pigmentation & Hyperpigmentation?

Skin pigmentation refers to the colour or tone of the skin, a characteristic primarily governed by melanin, a natural substance that also influences hair and eye colour.

A skin pigmentation disorder can manifest as either hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are conditions characterised by uneven skin pigmentation, often triggered by prolonged sun exposure or skin trauma. This can lead to the development of dark spots and patches on various body parts, including the face, neck, hands, and stomach.

These changes in colour result from an excess production of melanin and can appear as sunspots, age spots, melasma, or as a response to skin trauma.

While hyperpigmentation can affect individuals of all skin types, it is more prevalent in those with darker skin and may arise during pregnancy or as a consequence of acne, eczema, or other skin traumas.
