Skin peels are most effective after several weeks of preparation, especially for deeper peels and for those with skin types 4-6. Pre-treatment with skincare products readies the skin for the peel, preventing burning and potential hyperpigmentation. The recommended length of preparation varies based on your skin type and concerns.

Once you and your skin are prepared for a peel, the area is thoroughly cleansed with a pre-treatment antiseptic. The peel is applied, left to act, and then removed and deactivated. Post-procedure, it is crucial to wear a good SPF, and we recommend our Alumier SPF products.

Skin peels may cause itching and a stinging sensation during application. Ideally, they remain on the skin for 5 minutes, but it’s essential to communicate any discomfort to your doctor. Pre-procedure skincare specifically tailored to your skin type and peel treatment should be used for optimal results.

This safe and effective procedure refreshes and rejuvenates the skin while addressing fine lines, texture, tone, and wrinkles. Almost any area of the skin can be suitable for a peel, including the face, back, décolletage, neck, arms, and legs, especially if there are scars and pigmentation issues.

Pre-treatment is essential to prevent damage to the skin during the peel. In some cases, a good medical skincare regimen may be more suitable than a peel.

At our clinic, thorough skin assessment is done with Visia consultation technology. Before proceeding with a peel, a pre-peel treatment is often initiated for desensitisation.

Preparation is crucial to avoid skin damage during the peel. Most patients experience minimal to no side effects, with the treated skin appearing virtually normal. Mild sloughing, weeping, or scabbing may occur rarely. Temporary redness can be covered with makeup.

Picking at scabs may lead to scarring, hypopigmentation, or hyperpigmentation. Side effects, if any, may include stinging and temporary redness.

Deeper peels can cause crusting and peeling of the skin, which is normal in the peel process. They are not suitable for irritated skin, recent laser resurfacing (within the last 6 weeks), viral infections, or recent use of Roaccutane.

Roaccutane thins the skin and increases susceptibility to damage. Using a high-quality SPF sun protection is essential after skin peels.

Avoid touching, rubbing, massaging the area, or applying makeup for at least 6 hours.

Skin may sting, burn, or show flushing or redness for 2-4 hours post-peel.

Apply strong SPF (greater than SPF30) sun cream and use a moisturizer; SPF is crucial to prevent post-procedure hyperpigmentation.

For the next few days, skin may feel tighter and warm to touch, lasting 2-4 days.

Epidermolysis (whitening) and peeling may occur and last up to 3 weeks, depending on the peel strength and tolerance.

Avoid normal makeup until healed; mineral makeup may be applied.

Your skin specialist will recommend an Alumier MD homecare program for optimal results.

Avoid sun, tanning, and other cosmetic treatments for 2-4 weeks before fillers and injectable wrinkle treatments.

Chemical Peels

About this treatment

At our clinic, we emphasise the benefits of repeated treatments for progressive and gradual results, aiming to minimise side effects and downtime typically associated with deeper peels.

Chemical skin peels are exclusively administered by trained skincare professionals in a clinical setting to ensure their safe and effective delivery.

The mechanism of chemical skin peels involves deep exfoliation of the skin’s surface layers, prompting the body to rapidly replace them with new cells. With regular peels, the skin adapts to this process, rejuvenating itself akin to younger skin.

To prevent the body from reacting to this exfoliation as it might to trauma, potentially leading to pigment changes, the introduction of exfoliation must be gradual, allowing the skin sufficient time to adjust.

Pre-treatment products prepare the skin, expedite results, and minimise complications. Post-treatment products help minimise complications, aid in healing and soothing the skin, and maintain the achieved results. Professional treatments complement and enhance the effectiveness of home care products.

Frequently Asked Questions

We offer a range of treatments with varying strengths, providing effective solutions for various skin concerns. During a Visia consultation, our team of experienced practitioners will recommend the most suitable treatment course for you based on your specific areas of concern. They will tailor a skin peel to your skin type, condition, and tone. Some peels may require a skin preparation regime, and please note that skin types 4-6 may need additional preparation products for stronger peels, as advised during the consultation.

There are a few reasons why a chemical peel might not be the perfect solution for your skin concerns. Your practitioner will thoroughly review your medical questionnaire to ensure the treatment’s safety for you.

A chemical peel is a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. The regrowth of smoother skin occurs after the procedure. For light or medium peels, multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve desired results.

Chemical peels are used to address wrinkles, discoloured skin, and scars, typically on the face. They can be performed alone or in combination with other cosmetic procedures, and they vary in depth from light to deep. Deeper chemical peels provide more dramatic results but also require a longer recovery period.

The peel is applied with a brush.

A non-toxic chemical solution is applied to the skin surface with a light brush and absorbed before releasing the active acid, working from within the skin. This treatment is safe for delicate areas around the lips and eyes.

Following a chemical peel, your skin may be red, tight, irritated, or swollen. Adhere to your doctor’s instructions for sun protection, cleansing, moisturizing, and applying protective ointments. Avoid picking, rubbing, or scratching your skin. It may take several months for your skin colour to return to normal and for you to see the full results of the peel.

This depends on the type of peel and target depth. We gradually increase the strength of skin peels over several weeks for optimal results, aiming to limit healing time, which could be up to 14 days for medical peels.

A chemical peel can cause various side effects, including redness, scabbing, and swelling. Normal healing involves redness of the treated skin, which might last for a few months after a medium or deep chemical peel. Scarring is rare but can occur, typically on the lower part of the face. Changes in skin colour, either darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (hypopigmentation) than normal, can happen. Infection is a potential risk, leading to bacterial, fungal, or viral infections.
