What are Age Spots?
Alternatively referred to as sun spots or liver spots, age spots are flat discolourations with various shades (grey, brown, or black) that appear on various parts of the body. As the name “sun spots” suggests, these marks often emerge due to exposure and overexposure to the sun and other sources of UV light, including tanning beds. However, age spots can also be a common consequence of the ageing process.
The changes seen in age spots stem from the body’s heightened production of melanin, the natural pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye colour. These spots are most likely to manifest on the face, shoulders, back, arms, and hands.
